13.5% of our citizens and 19.1% of children live in poverty (US Census Bureau, 2019). Many more of our working families live at just above the poverty level. These are the people who are most vulnerable when legal emergencies occur and have had the greatest negative impact with the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether they are facing eviction, emergency medical situations, domestic violence or unscrupulous predators who steal life savings from unwary seniors, legal assistance is their only hope for finding justice.

And, as you may know, a 2017 study completed by the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Public Policy Center had alarming findings, including: more than 37% of Americans could not name a single right protected by the First Amendment; Only one in four could name all three branches of government; and one in three could not name any branch of government – not one. With civics instruction in schools having to be limited to certain grades and priorities focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), the lack of civic knowledge is now being realized. Arizona is fortunate to have teachers and schools who are placing an emphasis on civic engagement and learning in their schools. They need our help: Their budgets and time are tight.
